Purl stitches, along with knit stitches, are one of the most important basics in knitting. When you knit every other knit and purl stitch in the same row, you create rib knitting, and when you knit every other knit and purl stitch in the same row, you create stocking stitch.
How to purl a stitch:
1. Hold the needles correctly: Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand. The yarn should be in front of the work.
2. Insert the right needle: Insert the right needle into the first stitch from right to left, i.e. the opposite of when knitting stitches.
3. Wrap the yarn around the needle: Pass the yarn over the right needle from front to back.
4. Pull the yarn through: Pull the yarn through the stitch with the right needle so that a new loop is formed.
5. Slip the stitch: Let the old stitch slip off the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right needle.
6. Repeat: Continue in the same way until all stitches on the left needle are knitted.
Tip:
• Always keep the yarn in front of the work when purling.
• Purl stitches take a little longer to get used to, but practice will help your hand find its own flow.
• Together with knit stitches you can create many different patterns and structures.
