How to increase stitches at the end of the row

When knitting sweaters, sleeves, shawls or other garments, you may need to shape the work by increasing stitches at the end of a row. This will make the work wider at the sides. There are several methods, but here are two common and easy ways:

A. Increase through wraps

1. Knit the round until there is one stitch left.

2. Make a yarn over by wrapping the yarn around the right needle as if you were knitting a stitch.

3. Knit the last stitch as usual.

4. This gives a discreet increase.

B. Increase by knitting in the side thread

1. Knit the row all the way to the end.

2. Before turning the work, pick up the yarn between the last and first stitch on the needle.

3. Place the yarn on the left needle and knit it twisted.

This is a steady increase that is great when you want to expand the sides of a garment.

Tip:

• If you increase at the beginning and end of the round, the increase will be symmetrical.

• For a more decorative increase, you can leave the covers unstitched and twisted, which will create small holes along the edge.

• Note which row you increase on so that both sides of the garment are the same.
