How to pick up a stitch in a work in progress

Picking up a stitch can feel tricky if you've already knitted a bit of work, but with the right technique it's easy and neat. Here are step-by-step instructions:

1. Identify where to pick up the stitch: Decide which row and where on the work you want to pick up the stitch. It is common to pick up stitches along edges, in between pieces or at the edge of a pattern.

2. Prepare the yarn: Hold the yarn the same way you would when knitting regular stitches. If you are picking up from the edge, let the yarn hang loosely behind the work.

3. Insert the needle into the stitch: Insert the needle into the spot where the stitch is to be picked up. If you are picking up between stitches, aim the needle under the loop of the stitch between the stitches on the previous row.

4. Get the yarn: Wrap the yarn around the needle in the same way as with regular knitting.

5. Pull through the stitch: Pull the yarn through with the needle so that a new stitch is formed on the needle.

6. Continue as usual: Continue knitting according to the pattern. The picked up stitch now counts as part of the work and can be shaped just like regular stitches.

Tip:

• Pick up stitches loosely if the edge is elastic, otherwise the edge may be too tight.

• Count carefully so that you get the correct number of stitches.

• If you are picking up from a knit edge, pick up stitches from each stitch space. For purl stitches, pick up in the “v” shape under the stitch.
