Choosing the right yarn online is the key to a successful result. The yarn's material, thickness and twist not only determine how the garment will look, but also how it feels against the skin and how long it will last. At Marks & Kattens, we are passionate about making that choice easy for you by combining our long history of Swedish textile tradition with modern color scales.
When you buy yarn online from us, you can feel confident in the quality. We carefully test all our qualities to ensure they meet the standards, round after round. Below we guide you through our most popular yarn types.
Wool is perhaps the most classic material in our Nordic knitting tradition. Our range of wool yarns ranges from rustic, warming wool for outerwear to the softest merino wool that is completely itch-free and perfect for baby clothes. Wool has a fantastic ability to regulate heat and breathe, making it the first choice for sweaters, mittens and hats. Are you looking for something that is easy to knit with and gives a beautiful structure? Then wool is often the answer.
For spring and summer garments, or for interior projects such as crocheted tablecloths and dishcloths, cotton yarn is the obvious choice. Cotton is a plant fiber that does not warm in the same way as wool, making it ideal for cooler garments. Our cotton yarns are available in a huge range of colors and in several thicknesses. Many of our customers love using our mercerized cotton yarn for crochet, as it gives a nice shine and clear stitch definition. It is also durable and can withstand frequent washing.
Are you looking for an inexpensive yarn that still maintains high quality? Our acrylic yarn is a synthetic alternative that is easy to care for, hypoallergenic and very soft. It is a popular choice for blankets and accessories where you want to avoid animal fibers. We also often mix acrylic with polyamide to create durable yarns, such as in our classic rag sock yarn . The mixture gives the socks the durability needed to hold in shoes, while the wool warms the feet.
We know that it can sometimes be difficult to calculate exactly how many balls of yarn you need for a sweater. That's why we've developed a feature where you can easily buy yarn and patterns in packages. You choose the model you like - we calculate the yarn consumption for you.
For us, it is important that craftsmanship has a place in the future. That is why we are investing heavily in our range of Recycled yarn. By making use of waste materials from the textile industry, we can create new, beautiful yarns with less environmental impact. When you choose our eco-labeled alternatives, you are contributing to a more sustainable textile industry, stitch by stitch.
As a company with roots deep in Swedish soil, we understand the importance of good needlework. We compete not only with a wide range, but with knowledge. Whether you are looking for thicker yarn for a quick-knit trendy sweater or thin lace yarn for a shawl, we are here to help you.

Which yarn should I choose if I'm a beginner?
For beginners, we recommend a medium-weight wool or wool blend (4–5 mm needles). Wool is elastic and forgiving, making it easier to get even stitches compared to, for example, cotton yarn. Our rag sock yarn or Lovikka are excellent choices for your first projects because you will see results quickly.
Which yarn is not knitted?
If you want a completely non-stick yarn, we recommend merino wool, alpaca or our high-quality cotton yarns. These fibers are softer and have a finer texture than traditional wool. For babies and people with extra sensitive skin, our yarns marked "Baby" are always a safe bet.
How do I know how much yarn I need for a sweater?
The amount of yarn needed depends on the pattern, size and knitting tension. As a rule of thumb, a standard size women's sweater requires about 500–700 grams. To make it easy for you, we have created yarn packages that include patterns and exactly the right amount of yarn. That way, you don't have to guess!
