Casting on is the first step when you start knitting. The stitches form the foundation of your work and determine both the width and stability of the edge. There are several ways to cast on stitches, but one of the most common is cross casting on.
Here's how to do cross stitch step by step:
1. Measure the yarn: Leave a yarn end that is about three times the width of what you are going to knit.
2. Make a loop: Don't tie a knot, but make a simple loop and thread it onto one needle. This will be your first stitch.
3. Place the yarn in your hands: Hold the needle in your right hand. Take the end of the yarn over your thumb and the yarn from the ball over your index finger. Hold the yarn together with the other fingers of your left hand.
4. Create a stitch: Insert the needle under the yarn that is over your thumb, then over the yarn that is over your index finger, and pull the yarn through the loop at your thumb.
5. Tighten: Tighten gently so that the stitch is snug on the needle.
6. Repeat: Continue until you have cast on the number of stitches indicated in the pattern.
Tip:
• The stitches should not be too tight on the needle – they should be able to slide easily but still hold their shape.
• Practice slowly at first. After a few times, the movements will become automatic.
• If you find cross casting on difficult, you can start with a simple casting on: make a loop and insert the needle, pull the yarn through the loop and repeat. This gives a slightly looser edge, but is easier for beginners.
