The hat is knitted in the round on circular needles and double pointed needles, bottom up. You start with the red yarn and knit a wide, stockinette edge that then folds or rolls naturally. After the edge, the number of stitches is greatly reduced to create the wavy effect at the bottom, and the work continues upwards in stockinette with small woven-in color changes in white that mimic the seeds of the berry.
When the hat itself is tall enough, switch to green yarn to shape the hat. Here, regular decreases are made to create the characteristic, pointed leaves around the top. Finally, the remaining stitches are knitted straight up as a narrow tube to form the berry stem, which is attached and tied in a decorative knot at the top.
